Toronto, ON – October 15, 2021 – With a brand new full-length album on the horizon, Winnipeg-based trio, Sweet Alibi, today share the soulful new single, Slow Down. Featuring the group’s signature three-piece harmonies, backed by dreamy folk-pop melodies, Slow Down encourages listeners to be mindful and take time to be present, compassionate and connected to the world around us. Listen to the song here and watch the accompanying video here.

Written in January 2020, Slow Down is partly inspired by the Wet'suwet'en pipeline protests in British Columbia, Canada, and wildfires in Australia.

“I was reflecting on how a capitalist society impacts the environment. The rate at which we develop and consume seems to be unsustainable for the health and longevity of the planet, and creates wealth division leaving a lot of people behind, struggling to have their basic needs met,” says Sweet Alibi’s Jess Rae Ayre.

“Our smart phones have become almost like a Swiss Army knife with our connection to the outside world. There’s a lot coming in and a lot going out, at a rate much quicker than our brains have developed to process. I know for myself personally, if I am in an area where there’s a little phone reception and I am connected to nature and moving at a slower pace I feel a lot more regulated and connected to my internal emotional processing. It makes me more present and connected to my surroundings, which I’ve noticed is the first part of feeling compassion. I feel that mindfully slowing down creates more presence and compassion, which are key pieces in creating more equality for people, and more connected intention for how we treat the planet.

I don’t think people by nature are morally insensitive, but when there is added stress, people are feeling hurried and constantly chasing this dream of trying to keep up. It’s easy to lose touch with core values, which differ for everyone.

I don’t have the answers for climate change, I don’t have the answers for poverty and wealth division, but Kurt Vonnegut said it best: ‘We are here to help each other get through this thing, whatever it is.’”

Known for their soulful three-part harmonies, Western Canadian Music Award winners, Sweet Alibi, have shared their folk roots-pop infused music with listeners across North America and Europe since 2009. They are the distinct and complementary voices of Jess Rae Ayre, Amber Nielsen and Michelle Anderson, joined by Alasdair Dunlop on bass and Jon Smith on drums. Their music has garnered national accolades and awards, has been featured on MTV U.S., CMT, and has received major radio play on college/community and satellite radio, with several songs reaching the top 20 of CBC Music’s national charts – the most recent being Confetti, which charted for eight weeks.

The band will soon be releasing their fourth studio album, entitled Make A Scene, Recorded with producers Matt Peters and Matt Schellenberg (Royal Canoe, Begonia), the album is a melodic experience focused on hooky guitar lines and layered beats, inspired by the likes of Alabama Shakes and Bahamas. Sweet Alibi’s sound has been evolving and refining throughout their past album releases, extensive Canada-wide and international touring, as well as a focused effort to draw on the creative efforts of their favourite influences.
