SWEET ALIBI SET TO RELEASE MELODIC NEW ALBUM MAKE A SCENE ON JANUARY 28

LISTEN TO LATEST SINGLE SLOW DOWN

Toronto, ON – November 17, 2021 – There is more than a touch of magic in the luminous vocal harmonies powering the soulful roots-pop of Winnipeg combo, Sweet Alibi. Let’s just say, goosebumps are inevitable. Whether the voices of Jess Rae Ayre, Amber Nielsen, and Michelle Anderson are tightly braided together, as they are in the super-sticky title track of their dazzling fourth album, Make A Scene, or are ornamenting Ayre’s lead on the gorgeously propulsive and contemplative Slow Down, Sweet Alibi’s phrasings are at once their main attraction and chief calling card.

After trickling out tastes of their new studio record, today the band is thrilled to share the details of Make A Scene. Set for release on January 28, 2022, the album is a melodic experience focused on hooky guitar lines and layered beats, inspired by the likes of Alabama Shakes and Bahamas.

Sweet Alibi’s sound has been evolving and refining throughout their past album releases, extensive Canada-wide and international tours, and a focused effort to draw on the creative efforts of their favourite influences. Produced with Matt Peters and Matt Schellenburg – best known as members of the indie-pop squad, Royal Canoe, who produce under the Deadmen moniker – the band experimented with new instrumentation that has, until now, primarily been incorporated in to their live shows.

“Matt (Peters) and Matt (Schellenburg) were great to work with and really took their time to help us work out parts and add their personality to each song,” the band reflects. “They were willing to try things out, take things apart and put them back together.”

Working with synths, and with a focus on the electric guitar, the group took their time learning how to create unique sounds with amps, pedals, and new techniques, while also playing with different harmonies. While Ayre and Nielsen handle the lion’s share of the album’s lead vocals, Anderson steps up with electric guitar, swapping the banjo that was favoured on previous albums, to abet Sweet Alibi’s crack rhythm section of Alasdair Dunlop (bass) and Sandy Fernandez (drums).

These electrifying sonic adventures will be obvious to Sweet Alibi fans who have followed the band through their previous records. From the highly personal Confetti, to the nimble, synth-boosted Really Great, and the mournful yet heartfelt ballad, What Were You Dreaming, the band’s elevated sound rings through on each track.

“It’s nice to be able to share this music with a wider audience,” says Nielsen. “A lot of hard work and commitment went into making it. We are very committed. And I’m really looking forward to what we’re going to do next!”
