“We want a world in which many other worlds can fit in”   – EZLN, Chiapas, México

Toronto, ON – September 1, 2021– Tlalli Festival is a celebration of live music and ancient culinary traditions. It is dedicated to honouring and celebrating a multi-millenary-old connection that exists among the wide family of Indigenous Peoples across the Americas: from Guaranís in Brazil, Incas in Perú, Aztecs in México, to Six Nations in Canada and beyond. This event will commence with a ceremonial land acknowledgement by the indigenous performer, of Mixtec descent, Carlos Rivera.

Tlalli means ‘earth' in the Aztecs’ language, Náhuatl. Tlalli offers the opportunity to ground and reconnect ourselves directly with the soil through a basic ancient element: food.

Tlalli will allow us to taste the earth’s flavours through a feast of authentic Mexican/Mayan barbacoa tacos—cooked as in the continentally shared tradition of burying a 70-pound ram, three-feet in the ground, and slow-cooked with ambers for 24 hours. Vegan tacos will also be served—which will be cooked with fresh organic produce from Plan B Organic Farms.

This celebration brings us the opportunity to continue to build bridges between our own indigenous and non-indigenous communities, while we foster respect for each other, towards the land and acknowledge the people that care for it  — local land protectors, as well as thousands of Indegenous agricultural migrant workers who provide the majority of produce to our tables.

Live streaming onto YouTube will allow the concert to have further impact and encourage donations towards migrant workers’ causes and needs. Donations will be received via online on the day of the event and will go directly towards the Ontario-based NGO, Justice For Migrant Workers.

Escamilla, the curator, has gathered renowned artists such as Aline Morales, Logan Staats, Lemon Bucket Orkestra, OKAN, along with local migrant workers in an intimate audience to highlight the ways in which geographically distant Indigenous people are united by their ancestral knowledge, as well as common struggles against injustice, racism and exploitation across the Americas.

The concert event will be live streamed via Youtube and Facebook. 100% of all online donations towards the migrant workers' cause will be accepted directly by the NGO Justicia For Migrant Workers through this Paypal account: Donations JFMW.
